Among the world's universities, for many hundreds of years a medallion or chain of office has been a part of the academic regalia of the chief administrative officer. In 1967, on the occasion of the inauguration of its fifth president, the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ joined that tradition.

The Presidential Medallion of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½, worn the first time by President Robert W. Hiatt, was a gift from the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ Alumni Association. Its design is based upon the University of Â鶹´«Ã½ seal. The medallion was designed and wrought in sterling silver by noted silversmith Glen C. Simpson, associate professor of art.
